16 Things I Learned in 2016

16 Things I Learned in 2016

1. L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.

This year, I made a lot of big, scary decisions. Decisions over which I suffered from incredible anxiety. But, in the end, no matter how much I worried or how bad I thought things were, life. went. on. The sun still rose the next morning, and soon, those big decisions were in the past. And, looking back, they didn’t seem very scary at all.

2. Soy lattes are life

Less is more when it comes to my coffee shop drinks. The taste of espresso and soy milk is all I need.

3. Spread kindness

There’s enough hate in this world as it is. Why contribute even more? Spread kindness and light. The world needs it.

4. It will be okay

I experienced a lot of fear after quitting my job this year. After wasting days worrying about the future, I finally realized that the future will fall into place just as it’s meant to. It will all be okay.

5. Help is not on the way

That book isn’t going to write itself. I’m not going to wake up one morning, suddenly motivated to create. Help is not on the way. If there’s something I want, I need to figure out how to get it. It will not come to me.

6. Do more of what you love

During the first half of 2016, I was super invested in self-care. It helped me feel whole. When I do things I love, my quality of life is so much better.

7. Find presence

So often, I get caught up in social media and other people’s lives. When I slow down and focus on the here and now, I feel calm, happy, and inspired.

8. Always listen to your intuition

I learned how to do this toward the end of 2016 when it came time to make some tough decisions. I learned how to ask myself questions and feel the answers in my gut. So far, my intuition has never lead me astray.

9. Invest in yourself

Be a little selfish. Whether through books, courses, material goods, indulge in things that will improve your quality of life. It is so worth it.

10. Neutral is the new black

Black, gray, and cream. Seeing those colors in my wardrobe make my heart sing.

11. It’s not that bad

Whatever it is, it’s not that bad. Like I said earlier, life goes on and it will all be okay.

12. I want to live a creative life

This year, I re-fell in love with creating. Writing, photography, calligraphy, etc. These are the things that bring me the most joy. I think it would be so fulfilling to live a life where I’m able to create, always.

13. Just do you

We often get so caught up in how others will perceive us. Stop worrying about them and just. do. you. You’ll feel so free!

14. Make happiness a priority

There is no feeling greater than happiness.

15. You are valuable

We each have a story. We each have talents. We each serve a purpose. You contribute to this world in a way that no one else ever did or will. Recognize your value and live it.

16. Love

Love anyway. Love even though. Love just because.

  • Em, I love your list and definitely feel I can relate to quite a few of these items. I was in a huge state of transition a few years ago in determining what to do with my life. I had dreamed of being a Doctor for at least ten years and most of my childhood. It took a while to realize a new dream but I am so grateful I was able to see it. It was definitely worth the wait! I respect that you took so much time for yourself through self-care and to figure out what was right to do. Happiness really does make all the difference.
Wishing you a wonderful New Year!
